Medium Range Threats

Medium-range threats have multiple factors. That is why it is important to be proficient on the range at multiple distances and prepared for multiple scenarios. Here are the main things to consider when engaging a medium-range target.

WHAT IS MEDIUM RANGE?

First, let’s define medium range. Traditionally, a handgun's medium range is 10-15 yards. However, that can be extended depending on skill level.

SKILL SET

Consistent time on the range is the biggest key to becoming a proficient shooter. As your skill increases, so does your ability to protect. In the video, Grant is training different positions and movements to simulate potential scenarios. He is moving and shooting shots that are realistic in a self-defense situation. He is doing this to train up his accuracy while on the move. You’ll also notice that he is not hitting every shot. This is actually a good sign as it shows that he is pushing his limits to become better.

TYPE OF FIREARM

The distance also depends on the type of firearm. For example, a revolver would be usable in a 5-7 foot self-defense conflict or closer. However, using one at a medium to long distance is very difficult. Whereas a semi-auto handgun with an optic would be ideal for a longer engagement for multiple reasons.

TARGET'S SURROUNDINGS

As a protector, you must also be aware of your surroundings. Gauging other variables around your target is imperative. For example, bystanders could be nearby, causing you to make split-second decisions based on the threat. This could prevent you from engaging at a medium distance, especially if your skill level needs to be improved.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO TIME

Gauging the threat level and then choosing when to engage is a high-pressure decision that needs to be made quickly. Whether the threat is close or distant, having the ability to act fast could save your life. Training with a shot timer and practicing accuracy on multiple targets can help you be better prepared to make split-second decisions under pressure.

Train hard and Carry With Confidence.
