Using A Plate Carrier For Home Defense

Generally speaking, one would likely not find themselves in a situation where they need a plate carrier. However, much like having a concealed carry, you would rather not need it and have it than have it and not need it. We can all agree that if we had the time and were close to our plate carrier, we would prefer to have one if we found ourselves in a situation where there may be a gunfight.

When would I use a plate carrier?

Imagine a scenario where you are in your bedroom where your firearm and plate carrier are located, and something breaks out. Maybe you hear someone breaking into your house or even hear gunshots. If you do not already have your firearm on your body, you first grab your firearm holstered in your Tulster holster. Then, you decide you have time to put on your plate carrier, and you put it on.

Having body armor in a situation like this is ideal, whether you have to begin clearing your home room by room or you already know exactly where the attacker is. It is particularly useful if your home does not have the needed cover for a gunfight.

Pros & Cons

Aside from the obvious protection aspect, plate carriers have the tactical advantage of storage. It is a large reason why law enforcement and armed forces mark them as mandatory. A plate carrier pack can hold your firearm mags, med kits, and flashlights.

As far as cons go, plate carriers are heavy. There is no getting around it. And if you are in a situation where you need to be agile, you may have trouble getting the shots off that you need to. This is why you must train with your plate carrier on. Drills like Failure To Stop, The Dot Torture Drill, and 3D Vital Shooting are great places to start.

Plate Carrier vs Soft Body Armor

The next big question you have to ask yourself is, do I invest in a plate carrier or soft armor application? A plate carrier that can carry rifle-rated plates will provide the most protection. However, soft body armor is generally more concealable. Ultimately, this is a decision you must make. You have to decide what makes the most sense for your budget and situation.
